David is not a pretty man. His features are rather plain and utilitarian. He is, however, a large man with an imposing stature. He is very muscular with thick arms, legs, and chest thanks to his passion for all things physical. Despite his build, he is surprisingly fleet of foot thanks to a brief foray into the arcane sport of boxing. This adventure also gave him 'Cauliflower ear' an injury that is rarely seen in the modern era but is traditionally common with the sport. Thanks to modern medical technology, it was quickly repaired.
Personality
David’s physical appearance lends him the stereotype of a mean and aggressive man. He however has nothing left to prove.
He possesses a quick tongue and the tendency to speak his mind. This frankness has led him to fall foul of his superiors on several occasions, yet it has also made him close friends who appreciate his honesty, even if they do wish he were more diplomatic in expressing it. Such an attitude would suggest problems with authority, but to the right leader, David's loyalty is beyond question.
Brodie is good with his hands and together with a curious mind, he has advanced further than he thought possible. He does however possess an open contempt for Marines, which has on occasion escalated into violence. He cannot abide their tendency for overtly declaring superiority. Such feelings have only been compounded by recent bad experiences with them.
David holds few aspirations; the events of his life have had a knack for crushing those, so he now lives for the moment. Even his hope of becoming a SNCO is effectively dead, this time due to his own negligence.
Hobbies & Interests: Brodie enjoys activities that stimulate his body and is often experimenting with different activities that challenge him physically. For more intellectual entertainment, he can often be engaged in a games of chess, poker, and other games of chance but his success in these activities is low.
History
David was the eldest of two born on Farius Prime. His upbringing was rough with his mother running a rundown boarding house on Jinami Street. This atmosphere had a profound affect on young David, who learned to handle himself against the usually aggressive and rowdy tenants. It was here that he discovered his talent for all things mechanical, helping maintain the house, since they could not afford to hire someone. Given the atmosphere and the fact he never knew his father, he suspected from a young age that it might have been one of the guests.
Given the unsavory environment, Irene tried her best to give her children a normal life, but there was only so much she could do. She impressed upon them the importance to give their best in all things and do what was right. Consequently, young David found himself in the role of protector and mentor for Gareth, forming a very strong bond between the two brothers that would last for years.
At sixteen, David wanted out. There were few legal jobs on Farius, so he opted to join Starfleet. Not for patriotism or similar sentiments but for the job security and stability of life it offered. He hoped that, if successful, he would eventually be able to pull his mother and brother along with him and give them the good life they deserved. Not wishing to spend four years in school, he opted for the enlisted route, and thanks to his test scores, and prior life skills, was streamed for engineering training. He enjoyed mechanical and structural engineering but found warp theory too complex.
After graduation, David was assigned as an engineering technician at the aging Starbase Earhart. With the station past its prime, he was kept busy. He earned a reputation as a 'man of all trades' often asking for the unwanted jobs just to practice and improve his skills. Eventually, his skills were noted and he assigned to the Endeavour his first starship posting. The Endeavour was a good home and David meshed well with the crew. He was happy.
The Dominion war had a profound effect on Brodie both physically and mentally. Unable to deal with the aftermath, his career has suffered. Since his release from New Zealand, Brodie has served on, in his opinion, successively worse postings. Kepler Station, a cramped station in the Delta quadrant, has to be the worst. He has even been taken away from his beloved transporters and relegated to being a 'conduit-monkey'.
