Position: Assistant Chief Engineer
Species: Bajoran / Betazoid
Hair: Dark Brown
With a rich heritage from two very different species, Gar holds physical traits from both his Bajoran and Betazoid genetics. Prominent identifying features include cartilagenous nasal ridges that are common to all Bajorans, as well as other internal and external differences that distinguish him from pure Betazoids.
He also shares his mother's dark eyes and hair that signal Betazoidian heritage, along with a strong empathic ability that defines the Betazoid species. In all, the attractive traits from both species mould Gar into a physically appealing specimen, who's pleasant appearance is matched only by his intellect and optimistic outlook.
Gar is a professional through and through, the nature of his culturally diverse family and time spent in Starfleet instilling in him a patience and appreciation for the numerous unique species one encounters as a citizen of the Federation. This tolerance allows him to remain both focused and determined when on duty and just as respectful of his fellow officers and role within Starfleet when off duty.
The empathic powers gifted by his Betazoid genes allow Gar to anticipate the emotions and feelings of those around him and considers this a definite benefit when working as a member of a Starfleet crew. On the other hand, Gar by nature is mostly a private person, to the extent that he can come across as distant when interacting with others beyond the scope of their duties. He has a good sense of humour, which allows itself to shine through and help to form friendships when he feels comfortable with those around him.
Joining Starfleet was a life changing experience for Gar, which has only strengthened his desire to find out more about the universe, leaving him a naturally curious and intelligent person.
Born in Betazed's capitol, Gar Astrun spent his childhood in a peaceful and culturally diverse environment in which he expressed a natural curiosity regarding his Bajoran and Betazoid ancestry. With highly educated parents to guide and nurture him, Gar excelled at his studies and graduated from school with distinction, which allowed him entry into the University of Betazed. In 2374, at the age of fifteen and after a year of studying Astrophysics at the University, Betazed's defenses were overrun and so started the Dominion Occupation of his home planet.
The uprisings that ensued were a surprise and the violent attacks on Dominion troops saw the death of many Betazed citizens, including Gar Astrun's parents. The blow was devestating to the teenager and with no other option, he retreated with the remainder of his family to Earth. Though his grief crushed any interest in the Bajoran or Betazoid cultures, Gar found solace in his education and after finding a talent for Engineering theory and practical studies, entered Starfleet Academy at the age of seventeen.
After four years of majoring in Engineering, Gar graduated from the Academy and accepted a posting as a Junior Engineering Officer on a deep space mission which lasted three years. This time spent working with a diverse Starfleet crew allowed Gar the opportunity to develop a friendship with a fellow Betazoid, eventually forcing him to confront the emotions he held towards the loss of his parents and his refusal to acknowledge his heritage.
With the Alpha Quadrant finally experiencing a period of relief and celebration thanks to the end of the Dominion War and the return of the USS Voyager, Gar took the opportunity to return to his home planet where he spent three months working with the Betazed Engineering Committee. Time spent amongst his people was an unexpected comfort and with a renewed sense of purpose and a desire to further his career in Engineering, Gar accepted a post on the USS Endeavour, which remained his home until now.
