Wallace-Class

In 2376 Starfleet issued a general design brief for a station support vessel with the capability of a starship but the versatility to be assigned to patrol or utility purposes. The project brief for the Wallace class was handed to Starfleet and permission for base design, based on a scaled down version of the Defiant-Class, was approved.

Many of the concepts from the Defiant and Nova designs were reworked into the Wallace, although her structural design differs greatly due to being scaled down to nearly half the size. This follows the Klingon habit of basing several starships off of the eminently successful "Bird Of Prey" configuration. The Wallace’s deflector design borrows from the Nova’s sensor suite, while the engines required for atmospheric flight are reminiscent of a Danube runabout.

Primary testing at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards was deemed successful, after a few minor bugs were ironed out, and the USS Wallace is launched in 2379. Since then the Wallace has matched the production rate of the Defiant-Class and in many ways proved a more popular choice due to the low crew requirements.
