Hide is of average height and weight for a human hailing from Japan, well toned due to his rigorous kenjutsu regimen. His complexion is lighter than some Japanese, common for those who dwell on the island of Hokkaido. He has dark brown, almost black hair and hazel almond shaped eyes. Hide bears a scar on his right shoulder that looks eerily like a set of teethmarks.
Usually a carefree individual, in recent years Hide has become a bit more reserved. He knows when to separate pleasure from duty. Can become agitated around telepaths, particularly Vulcans. He possesses a keen analytical mind, which is sometimes a burden as he tends to pick out the flaws in most everyone around him.
Hideyoshi is the third son of Saito and Miyumi Shimura, owners and operators of Shimura Pharmaceuticals; a major dispenser of psychotropic medications in Hokkaido Japan. The Shimura family are descended from the great Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, while admittedly most Japanese of the 24th Century could probably claim such heritage it is a fact that Saito does not hesitate to mention every chance he gets, which often garners a rolling of the eyes from Hide and his brothers. There was never a lack of money as Saito was a prominent Psychiatrist and Miyumi a ruthless businesswoman, particularly when they combined their talents 15 years ago and created what is now Shimura Pharmaceuticals.
From a young age his parents instilled in him a strong set of morals and an adherence to duty. This of course did not stop him from being a rambunctious child who caused no end of mischief for the family's servants. His Primary and Secondary schooling were done in Sapporo, the capitol of Hokkaido, where Hide excelled in Science and Social Studies courses. His parents believed he was on track to follow in his Father and elder brother's footsteps and attend medical school so it came as a bit of a shock when he applied, and was accepted to, Starfleet Academy in San Francisco. He explained that it was not in his bones to be grounded in Hokkaido for the rest of his life and his parents respected his wishes.
To Saito's relief Hide continued his studies into Psychology while at the Academy. Life in San Francisco was much different and took some getting used to. During his second year he entered into a relationship with a classmate, Carlos Vasquez. While the relationship did not last more than a few months it did much for Hide to realize he was attracted to men. He would be in several such relationships as he would always find a major flaw, at least to him, in his partners' character. None of this would distract him from majoring in Psychology with an emphasis on Exopsychology and continuing an extra two years to minor in Anthropology.
He graduated at the age of 24 with the rank of Ensign and accepted a position on the Akira class USS Draco as an intern Counselor under Alana Tann, PhD. He would serve on the Draco, commanded by Captain Sulan, a Vulcan, for two years during it's exploration of the Valorn Expanse, a previously uncharted area of space in the Beta Quadrant. During the course of this mission the crew encountered a new species, a peaceful Avian race called the Kryl. Hide's background in anthropology allowed him to be part of the team that made first contact. During the away mission Captain Sulan became increasingly agitated and returned to the ship leaving XO Lieutenant Harry Geither and Hide in charge. The two were able to complete the mission and extended the Kryl an invitation to journey to Earth and speak with the leaders of the Federation. Upon return to the ship Captain Sulan informed the crew they would be immediately returning to Federation space.
***THE FOLLOWING IS CLASSIFIED***
Unbeknown to the crew the Captain was beginning to experience pon farr and had hoped to return to Vulcan to complete the rituals with his mate, T'Pehl. While the ship was months away from the Alpha Quadrant Sulan believed he could stave off the symptoms through meditations.
He was wrong.
After only a month he could no longer control his urges and would have to satiate his pon farr by mating with someone. Unfortunately for Hide the Captain was so far gone by this point that he was the first person Sulan encountered. The Vulcan attacked Hide and locked themselves in the Ensign's quarters where he brutally raped the young man, both sexually and telepathically. Once Sulan's mental faculties were his own he was horrified at what he had done and confined himself to the brig. Hide spent nearly a month in Sickbay recovering from the attack and bears a scar on his right shoulder where Sulan tore a chunk of flesh with his teeth.
Upon return to Federation space the entire matter was swept under the rug, so to speak. Sulan retired from Starfleet and returned to Vulcan where he has secluded himself away from the rest of society, presumably remorseful for what he had done. Hide was put on medical leave until he could be deemed psychologically sound and fit to return to duty. The incident was classified and the only other two from the Draco crew who were aware of what had gone on, the XO Lieutenant Commander Janice Kline and CMO Dr. Yorel, were sworn to secrecy.
Hide took a leave of absence from Starfleet after returning from the Beta Quadrant and returned to Hokkaido. He secluded himself for several weeks from his family, unable to speak what had occurred. Finally one morning he set out on foot into the mountains north of his family's estate, intent on ending the pain. As he was about to leap to a doubtlessly painful death upon razor sharp rocks he was stopped by an old man simply called Kaigen.
Kaigen took Hide to a strange hut further in the mountain range and helped him meditate upon the events of the past few months. He was eventually able to find his center and calm his turbulent emotions. He vowed never to allow himself such weakness and, fortunately for him, Kaigen was a master in the ancient Japanese fighting style of kenjutsu. The sensei taught Hide the fundamentals of fighting with the katana over a two year period of time. Hide kept in touch with his family, but continued to live in the wilderness until his training was complete. Starfleet was on the verge of declaring him AWOL when he finally returned to duty. After being declared fit to return he applied for a position on Kepler Station. While Starfleet may have thought he was ready, Hide himself had some doubts and would prefer the out of the way assignment.
