Introduction to Recruitment
You can't have a sim if you don't have players. Simple as that. To get players you will need to recruit.
Recruiting can be done in a number of ways. It's best to try a variety of different recruitment techniques in order to best spread the good word about your sim. Your best bet though is word of mouth. This will probably start with you hitting up all your friends, family and people you've simmed with before that you feel would be an asset to your sim. Once you have players on board then they can continue this strategy for you. If they enjoy the sim, encourage them to tell their friends, family and people they've simmed with as well. For a lot of people word of mouth is the best way to recruit, especially if you are well known in the Fleet or already have a good reputation as an excellent simmer.
For the rest of us helions though there are other ways to recruit. There are two main types, active and passive recruiting. Active recruiting is probably the most popular of the two. It requires continuous work from you by regularly posting ads to ad sites, yahoogroups or forums. Passive recruitment requires a little bit of effort from you up front and then that's it, it will continue to work for you on your behalf. It includes posting to link sites, top sites, setting up a banner exchange, joining webrings and search engine optimisation.
For more information and links on each of the above, see Places to Advertise.
Search Engine Optimisation is a web development thing. It's about getting your sim's site more readily recognised by search engines and those using said search engines to find sims. There are a few ways to do this and they include:
- Add more relevant keywords and description to your site's metadata (in the html) on each page
- Submit your sim's site to search engines like google, yahoo etc
- Get other websites to link to yours because if more sites do that then your site will move up the search engine's ranking system
Now go. Spread the good word of your sim, both actively and passively!
