Considering the fact Nikolas looks like the personification of the word Grandfather it might come as no surprise that he acts very much as you would expect. He is slow to anger and likes to take the time to think things through before making a decission. However over four decades of experience has given him the tools to make snap decissions when needed.
Nikolas was the third generation of Bakyrs living in Suu'ot Sanko Province on the planet Korica II. Despite being born on Trillus Prime, his grandparents had settled on the colony world, where technology had been set aside for the most part, because they felt that the Federation had become too complex and wanted a simpler existence. It was also quite likely connected to the fact Nikolas' Grandfather had been rejected by the Symbosis Commission some years prior. Despite the beliefs of his fellow Koricanians, Nikolas always had a fascination for new developments and loved to work on the limited farming equipment they used on a daily basis. Eventually this developed into a desire to seek more than life on the backwater planet could offer, so the teenager packed his bags and shipped off world on a freighter to forge a new life for himself.
Although they didn't agree with the choice both Kimmek and Latasi were supportive and scraped together enough to give Nikolas a few months to find something to build a career from. Adjusting to living in a more advanced world might have slowed Nikolas down somewhat but he never once thought of quitting and returning to Korica. In fact there were many aspects of life amongst the various worlds of the Federation the teenage male found quite appealing. Not the least of which were the females and alcoholic creations of various species. Learning the theory behind the various technologies proved to be an achievable task and soon led him to enrol in Starfleet Academy where he specialised in Engineering and Flight Control. The latter became more of a passion and soon gave Nikolas a direction for all his enthusiasm.
The first couple of years were like any other Cadet's experience but as a Third-Year Cadet Nikolas was lucky enough to serve under Captain Rachel Garrett on the U.S.S. Enterprise-C. In many ways the eventual loss of someone he had so much respect for is what drove Nikolas to become a Commanding Officer himself.
At the beginning of his service on the U.S.S. Roosevelt, a Constellation-Refit Class vessel, Nikolas met the woman that would eventually become his wife. Mary-Jane Spencer was the daughter of the ship's human Captain and one of the few civilians permitted on board Starships at that time. It wasn't until many years later that it became common place for families to travel with serving Officers. The redheaded beauty had caught the eye of many a young Officer but she saw something in Nikolas and after a couple of years dating the pair were married in the Spring of 2347 back on Korica. His transfer to the U.S.S. Fairchild brought Nikolas to his ancestral home, Trill, and allowed him the chance to reconnect with the history and culture that he had never been able to know on the colony world. Until this point in time he had always been one of the few Trills in the area. Now he found himself surrounded by people with similar spotted skin as himself. This opened up a new desire to reconnect that Nikolas had never known and he soon developed a large group of friends there. They were more than happy to join him for a drunken weekend to celebrate his promotion in 2349.
Mary-Jane found this newfound interest in his own species slightly difficult because it created a gap between the pair that hadn't been there before. She began to feel like being human was a negative thing in her husband's mind. This grew into something of a chasm when they failed to get pregnant for almost two years. After finally conceiving but loosing the baby the couple sought medical assistance to overcome their genetic differences. Nine months later Mary-Jane gave birth to their daughter Alice and the chasm began to heal itself with the help of the infant half-Trill. It would be another few years before the family gained its fourth and final member; Kimmek, named after Nikolas' father. For Nikolas this helped to take his mind off the recent loss of his parents who had passed away peacefully back on their farm.
With a new decade came a new direction in Nikolas' career when a transfer to Starbase 72 moved him away from Flight Control and into the realm of Command. Although he missed being behind the CONN this opened up new challenges and gave Nikolas a fresh enthusiasm for Starfleet. It was perhaps this enthusiasm that allowed him to carry on after the loss of his wife and twelve year-old son after an attack on the Starbase. With a fourteen year-old daughter relying on her father Nikolas decided to take some time away from Starfleet and the pair moved to Trill where they remained until Alice finished with her education. This time allows Nikolas to focus on being a good father and return to some of his past enjoyments such as piloting. He takes up a position with a civilian freight company teaching their pilots and on the odd occasion filling in when required. Alice takes an interest in her fathers work and soon convinces him to teach her as well. Little does he know that this will lead to his daughter following in his footsteps and joining Starfleet as well.
Chance would have it that at the same time Alice was leaving for the Academy, and Nikolas would be alone for the first time in over twenty years, an old college from Starbase 72 was being promoted to replace the departing Commanding Officer which left an opening for Nikolas' old job. Although he obviously had reservations about returning to the location of his wife and son's deaths his sense of duty won out and the now forty-nine year-old Commander put on his Starfleet uniform once again.
Just before the Dominion war broke out and life in the Federation became more difficult for some member worlds Nikolas was once again reunited with the U.S.S. Fairchild. This time though he would be the man sitting in the main chair. Alice decided to take her vacation time from the Academy and visit her father and congratulate him in person. This would be the last time he saw his daughter until after the destruction of the Fairchild in a battle against a Dominion attack fleet. Ordering an evacuation Nikolas and his crew were forced to watch from their escape pods as Breen and Jem'hadar vessels tore the Nebula-Class starship apart. Suffering minimal loss of life though Nikolas refused to consider the event a complete failure since life was what they served to protect not ships or starbases. Along with many of his crew Nikolas served the closing year of the war aboard the U.S.S. Ulysses and saw more combat than throughout the rest of his career. Because of this he was quite happy to take up teaching once again, this time for Starfleet.
Not long later though the chance to command his own vessel came by again and Nikolas decided to take it. Of course it didn't hurt that the vessel in question was to carry the name Fairchild. Taking this as a sign he readily accepted the position and served as Captain for the next eight years. Over that time his daughter established a strong career for herself and married a man who treats her wonderfully. In recent years she has given birth to three children; Lucy, Michael and Piper. All of whom jump at the chance to spend time with their Grandfather which prompted Nikolas to relinquish the keys to the car, so to speak, to one of his most trusted crewmembers and step into the world of semi-retirement. At sixty-five he felt it was time to let the younger members of Starfleet shine and spend his remaining years training the Officers of tomorrow. This plan was short-lived though when Task Force 92 needed a Commanding Officer to take over for Commander Cole Lockwood, who was himself relieving Commodore Gregory Blake, as temporary CO of Kepler Station (KS14.1: A Tiny Oversight).
Following the failed attempt to divert the oncoming asteroid field by the U.S.S. Harbinger and U.S.S. Tokyo, the station was struck head on by the devastating force of some of the spatial debris. In the turbolift on his way towards Sickbay at the time, Nikolas was severely injured and required extensive surgery upon being transported aboard a rescue shuttle. His life was saved thanks to the efforts of Lieutenant Samantha Juarez however the injuries to his spine were too extensive and the Trill found himself confined to a hover chair (KS19: Boy Who Cried Wolf).
