Pili Freitas-Drune

Rank: None
Position: Civilian
Player: Derrick

Appearance

Species: ½ Human – ½ Betazoid
Gender: Male
Born: 2369
Hair: Dark Brown
Eyes: Blue
Height: 5'11"

Pili is tallish, and still growing. He has some of both his fathers in him, but Mike sees mostly Lonus. Mike’s blue eyes are about the only obvious thing not phenotypically Betazoid about him. He’s generally tanned and in good physical shape.

Personality

Relentless. That’s one word his parents always use for him. Once he’s set his mind on something, he doesn’t let it go easily. He can quickly become annoying in his single-mindedness. Mike and Lonus had always hoped it was something he would grow out of, but it seems he’s just gotten better at subtlety and discretion. He’s incredibly friendly and will chat with anyone who lets him. He’s always been more concerned with the genuine happiness of others (as he sees it) than with their express wishes.

Hobbies & Interests

Pili is an artist at heart. If there is some way to directly express himself through it, he’ll give it a try. He sings, paints, sculpts, dances, and plays piano and cello fairly regularly. He loves finding new hobbies and outlets for his energy and emotions, though. He also sees himself as something of a self-appointed matchmaker. He can’t understand why anyone would want to be alone, and his sense of people’s personalities does give him an edge in finding people that are compatible. He rarely sees people beyond that sense of them though, so his matches don’t always end up the way he expects.

History

Pili has grown up surrounded by family. Lonus’ parents are diplomats working in the UFP Embassy of Betazed in Paris, Mike’s parents are both research scientists based in Honolulu. Mike and Lonus found San Francisco a perfect compromise of closeness and distance.

Pili’s conception is not something his fathers often talked about to anyone but their immediate family. Officially, he is the child of Mike and Lonus’ sister, Aliza. Unofficially, Lonus was a skilled geneticist and genetic engineer. Pili looks nothing like his aunt, and strongly takes after Lonus. Mitochondrial DNA matches Aliza (there was an inquiry after some allegation were leveled), but what, if anything, was done to the nucleus in Aliza’s egg…Mike and Lonus have always publically refused any comment other than to insist that Pili is their child and nothing else matters.

Federation schools offered unparalleled education there in the shadow of Starfleet Academy, so he attended them for much of his education. He also went part-time to the Betazoid school attached to the Consulate in order to train and learn about his non-human side. Due to his mixed nature, Pili is a strong empath and a limited telepath. Like most Betazoid children, that telepathy didn’t manifest until fairly recently, during his adolescence. Unlike those children, his empathic abilities have been present since birth Though they first manifested in a very limited form, they’ve grown stronger as he has matured.

This sensitivity has had a profound influence on Pili’s life and interests. Music, art, dance, sculpture…all of these have been outlets for the emotions he’s always felt so deeply. He’s always been more likely to see the ‘inside’ of a person than the ‘outside.’ This has earned him many true, if unexpected, friends. It has also angered some of his shallower classmates in the past.

Losing Lonus hurt Pili deeply. The shuttle Lonus was in had a catastrophic failure in its grav-emitters moments before landing. It crashed on the landing pad almost right in front of them while Mike and Pili were waiting with the families of the other passengers. They both felt Lonus’ mind and heart reaching out to them before they were abruptly cut off. The Betazoid counselors worked with them both for several months before signing off on their medical paperwork.

They really have done well, considering, but the accident is still effecting Pili. When under stress, he’s started having a harder and harder time containing his empathy and telepathy. The telepathy is still fairly weak, so it hasn’t really caused many problems. His empathy is much stronger, though. He hasn’t had too much problem screening out or distancing himself from the emotions of others, but he’s had a few instances where he has projected some pretty intense emotions onto people around him. The counselors told him and his father that this was fairly typical, especially at his age. They expect it will resolve itself over the next several months, but only time will tell…
