History
Childhood/Teen Years: Ryu does not know who his parents are, or where he was born. As he baby, he was abandoned at a monestary in china. The monks who lives there took him in. They had a love for old martial arts movies, and named Ryu accordingly. Being raised in a monestary, Ryu was not near technology for his childhood, except for an old television and moves that were hundreds of years old. He was taught discipline, and how to fight at an early age. By the time he was 16, he had mastered several martial art forms, and had won several local and national tournaments. He had very little formal schooling.
When he was 17, he was in town and encountered several starfleet officers. He spoke with them for a long time, and decided that he wanted to join starfleet and see the galaxy. He spoke about it with the monks, and though they tried to change his mind, he was determined to go. He left with nothing but the clothes on his back, and made his way to San Francisco. He took the entrance exams, but barely passed. As his command track he choose helm, even though he had no experience.
Starfleet Academy: His time at the academy was challenging and rewarding for Ryu. In his first self-defense class, when asked to attack his instructor, he asked why. The intructor attacked Ryu to prove that hesitation was unacceptable, and Ryu promptly broke his arm, earning him an A. In science classes, he would get in trouble for arguing with what the instructors taught, returning their verbatim with philosophy learned from his home. He failed at basic engineering and operations, not understanding the dynamics of how a warp drive worked or how a computer processed. Where he truly shined was at the Helm of a ship. It seemed as if when he was behind the controls, the ship became an part of him, and he loved to fly. He graduated Starfleet academy at the age of 22 in the bottom half of his class, but with recomendations from many of his instructors.
After the Academy: Ryu's first post was aboard the U.S.S. Tyr, which was an Akira class. He quickly proved himself to be an extremely able helm officer. His quick wit got him in trouble, however, and made him enemies aboard the vessel. He was jumped in a corridor one day, and sent several crewman to sickbay. He was arrested and placed in the brig while an investigation was launched. Although he was found innocent of any wrongdoing, the captain of the Tyr requested that he be transfered.
Ryu's next post was on Starbase 238, where he became familiar with fighter pilots of the 79th Wing. He made friends with them, and for a while considered switching to the fighter corps. He flew the U.S.S. Greystone through several combat missions. While on a patrol in the romulan neutral zone, the Greystone came under attack from several Klingon warbirds. The klingon's were pirates, and boarded the vessel. Ryu awoke to find them in the hall, and attacked a group of four who were armed with bat'leth's. He was cut several times, but came out of top. After the battle was over, he was awarded for bravery under fire, and assigned to the U.S.S. Grant.
Onboard the Grant, Ryu met his real father. At first he did not believe it, but after DNA tests confirmed it was true, he attempted to have a relationship whit the man who was a Lt. Cmdr. As time wore on he learned that his father wanted to commit mutiny and take over the Grant. Though he stuggled with the decision, Ryu reported it to the Captain, and his father was arrested. Ryu applied for a transfer.
Tired of fighting, and wanting nothing but peace for himself, Ryu requested service abaord a science post. He was assigned to the Venice.
