Personality
Doctor Sarah Martin
Sarah is generally mild-mannered and polite, though hardly a doormat. It takes quite a bit to get Sarah angry: cruelty to animals or children, seeing patients in Sickbay who have been injured by some deliberate and unjustifiable means, and gross injustice. However, once her temper is riled, it has a legendary status. She has a dry wit that would come across as sarcasm in another tone of voice, and a couple of quirks (she carries on conversations with her cat).
History
Sarah Martin's family can trace their roots back to the original Mars colonists, including those who fought for Martian independence. Though human, she considers herself more Martian than Terran, exhibiting the independence and free spirit of many from the planet.
Her parents met during the construction of the USS Surak at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards; her father was a civilian engineer, and her mother a nurse assigned to the Surak. Martin followed two brothers into the family, and grew up on Mars, rather than on the Surak, as her parents felt a stable home in a safe environment was the best place for the Martin children.
All three of the Martin children joined Starfleet, a decision influenced by the stories their mother told when she returned on leave to Mars. Martin's brother, Andrew, joined Starfleet only months before the beginning of the Dominion War. He sustained severe injuries in a battle with the Cardassians, and eventually died of them. Zack did not graduate from the Academy until after the war was over. Martin continued with her plans to join Starfleet, over the objections of her father and grandparents, and with the support of her mother, her main objective to ensure that Andrew's fate would not befall any other officers. Her decision to specialize in infectious diseases was based on a need for the specialty in Starfleet.

Sarah's first position was on board the U.S.S. Ilium, where she served until she struck a superior officer after realizing he was abusing his son. Though Sarah did not stand a court martial for the offense (her superior officer did), she was transferred to a much less desirable position on the joint Federation/Cardassian venture on Verok Nor.
Since Andrew's death, Sarah has harbored a deep unease about Cardassians. Despite her intellectual knowledge that not all Cardassians are bad people, the unease permeates her interactions with them, and she cannot bring herself to completely trust any Cardassian. Though she tries to hide her discomfort, it occasionally becomes noticeable. This became an issue for Sarah while on Verok Nor, and it was with some relief that she left the station when the Federation pulled out of the effort. She was transferred to the Archimedes, which some would say was still an undesirable station, but given that she was no longer surrounded by Cardassians, Sarah does not feel like complaining.
On the Archimedes, Sarah has made a number of new friends, including Serenity Phillips and Hadion Fare. Sarah and Hadion began a relationship that abruptly ended when Hadion sacrificed himself in order to save the lives of others. Archimedes was destroyed not long after and Sarah was reassigned to USS Hippocrates as their Assistant Chief Medical Officer at the rank of Lieutenant. She was recently volunteered to serve on Kepler Station as their Chief Medical Officer. Since then, she has reconnected with old colleagues such as Lieutenant John Reynolds and Lieutenant Talva Ren.
During her time on Kepler Station, she has become romantically involved with John Reynolds. She's also had some less satisfying relationships, including one that is becoming increasingly adversarial with the station's executive officer, Isis Rae. Ironically, it was during the polywater intoxication incident aboard the U.S.S. Hippocrates where the statuses of both relationships intensified.
Several months passed with only minor notes for the Sickbay log, with two notable exceptions; Kennedy Monroe's injury when Bradley Halifax was pulled through a subspace rift to Kepler Station, and when Maxine Gaius transported a creature from another subspace rift, an incident known around the station as the attack of the giant orange floaty thing.
Unfortunately, both Sickbay and the morgue were full when Bajoran terrorists attacked Kepler. Aided by members of the Dalliance crew and Dr. Monroe, Sarah attempted to set up a triage station on the Promenade and was subsequently attacked by members of the terrorist crew. This unfortunately ended in the demise of the Dalliance's doctor, Joe. Afterwards, during the clean-up, Sarah discovered conclusive proof of what she'd suspected for some time -- Gregory Blake, commander of Kepler Station, was suffering from alcohol dependence.
