PO2 Vincenzo M. Labolida

Rank: Petty Officer 2nd Class
Position: Helmsman/Shuttle Pilot
Player: Shawn

Appearance

Species: Human
Gender: Make
Born: 2360
Hair: Dark Brown
Eyes: Brown
Height: 5'11"

Vinny has incredibly captivating eyes and a toned, muscular body forged after hours spent in the gym. He is what some might label a 'pretty boy' but there is more to him than meets the eye.

Personality

Vinny can be a little rough on the exterior, but also has a kind heart. Most people with access to his background assume he is a rough customer, but those without that access take him at face value.

He can be gruff, but also soft spoken. He is fairly quick to take slight, but also quick to forgive.

In spite of his shadowy past, Vincenzo has a surprising good streak. It’s the same conscious that got him out of War’s Child and into Starfleet.. Living on the streets made him harder than he seems at first glance. People always assume he is just a pretty boy. It also made him a survivor, and he’s probably the one you want on your side if your back happens to be against the wall.

His greatest weakness is his occasional lack of faith in others. He’s seen to many people, himself included, take the wrong path or the easy path or .. . you get the picture.

Vinny wants to be a fighter pilot. However, with his lack of formal education he has never been able to pass the preliminary entrance tests for the academy.

Hobbies & Interests

Vinny enjoys reading, boxing and martial arts. One of his true loves however, is painting and drawing. He often spends off duty time locked away working on his art, but it is a talent he didn’t discover until he joined Starfleet, so he is still exploring the various media.

History

Vincenzo M. Labolida was born on the non-Federation world of Ver’sed. When he was six, his parents were killed in the intermittent brush wars that racked the planet continuously. Left to his own devices by a government unprepared to handle the constant stream of orphans created by the intermittent fighting, he lived first in his abandoned family home with his older sister, and then when the house was destroyed in a mortar attack – the streets.

Vinny and Tam lived hand to mouth and survived only by begging, borrowing or stealing what they needed to live. Living on the streets meant additional dangers now. The fighting meant that many of the disenfranchised and displaced wanted revenge; and gangs of men and women looking for payback began to form.

For four years they eked out a mean existence in the streets of Ver’sed’s capitol, even avoiding the worst of the gangs. Then, a week after Vinny’s tenth birthday, Tamara disappeared. The young boy searched for his sister, until he finally wandered into the territory of one of the gangs. He was quickly herded into an alley and set upon. But then the young boy did something none of his attackers expected. He grabbed the closest gang member, and in a rush of fear and adrenaline, began to beat the older boy senseless. He struck out at anyone who came near him, until the leader of the pack moved the group back. He decided on a new approach, and that was adopting Vinny into ‘War’s Child’.

As the newest member of the gang young Labolida was given petty crimes and tasks to complete, and during the process was jailed several times. However, since the government was largely unstable and changed hands ever few months, he was released or managed to escape from incarceration six times by the age of 16.

The young man survived into his early teens and War’s Child became one of the more feared ‘families’ on the planet. It was at about this time the unification faction achieved several strategic victories and seized control of the Vers’ed Government. Within a span of three years most of the gangs and minor warring factions were wiped out, and others began to surrender. Not so War’s Child, however. The family like gang simply went underground, preying on the populace. Their criminal and intimidation tactics increased, and numerous deaths were linked to the gang’s activities.

PO2 Vincenzo M. Labolida
Vincenzo might well have spent his entire adult life in prison except for one incident that would change his life direction. And old woman was carrying groceries home when she came across a pack from War’s Child. When she tripped, some of the gang members shoved her down, and for some reason Vinny snapped. He attacked his fellow gang members and drove them off, then led the elderly woman to safety.

During the exchange Vinny’s life was threatened, and normally that meant he was fighting for his life. The next time he met with members of his gang they had hunted down the same old woman and beat her until she was hospitalized. Vinny didn’t wait for the customary threats to begin, he merely attacked. In the aftermath he accidentally struck the officer trying to pull him off his gang mates. One War’s Child was hospitalized with severe internal injuries and the other was dead.

The Authorities took Vincenzo Labolida into custody and faced with a young man who had been in and out of the system for an escalating series of crimes, offered him a choice. The Federation had granted them provisional membership due to the efforts to quell the violence and unite their people under one peaceful faction. Permanent membership depended on how they performed during the review period, and young men and women like Vinny were making them look bad.

He was told that he could either spend life in prison, or join Starfleet. If he joined Starfleet he could never return to Ver’sed. At the time he believed there was nothing left for him on the planet, so he took the offer of Starfleet.

Basic was tough, but as with most moments of struggle in his life, Vincenzo was determined to succeed. During testing it was revealed he had almost no education, but also that he had a knack for flying.

Petty Officer Kip Marsten took the young man under his wing and helped him to pass the tests needed to enter flight training. Vincenzo has been a pilot every since, with an eye toward someday entering the Academy and becoming a fighter pilot.

One Mystery still permeates the young enlisted man’s life however. He received a message on his 24th birthday that simply read, “Happy birthday little brother”. He has been hunting for Tamara ever since. His transfer to Kepler postpones that search, but not his passion for finding out what happened to her all those years ago.
