Personality

Z'tan is an incredibly dedicated officer, and can sometimes be abrupt while on duty. he has a fascination with human culture, and a wicked sense of humour. He is always calm, nothing ever appears to faze him, He is focused on duty above all other things, and has managed to reconcile any conflicting loyalties he has both within himself and to the satisfaction of Starfleet higher ups.

There is no doubt that Z'tan still has his secrets. He at first appears to be a man of contradictions: artist, competent fighter, Romulan among humans... Somehow he has seamlessly integrated all facets of his personality into a complex whole.

History

Z'tan is the child of a prominent Romulan family. He counts members of the senate, higly ranked military officals and a popular poet amongst his relatives. Z'tan excelled in all subjects in his early education, particularly art and hand to hand combat. He was always pushed to achieve, and his intellect and physical condition, even then, were certainly well above average.

Z'tan decided at a young age to follow his father into the military, despite earning at a very young age a reputation as a talented artist who created stunning water sculptures. Z'tan began his career in the Romulan military as a starship pilot. He excelled in his role, and quickly shifted up the ranks. By the age of 40 he had commanded a Warbird in several successful engagements.

It was at this point that Z'tan took an extended leave of absence from the military, citing an interest in diplomacy and a wish to learn more about Terran culture. Z'tan had considered humans to be interesting and formidable warriors for some time, and was granted his leave of absence with surprisingly little trouble.

Z'tan returned to the military six years later. although in a dramatically different role. He commanded a small vessel that operated in close proximity to the Neutral Zone, although the exact nature of the ship's mission remains classified.

After the death of Praetor Shinzon and the resulting newly forged relationship with the Federation, an officer exchange program was proposed. Z'tan was the first member of the Romulan military to be accepted into this program, and was givern the rank of ensign and a position as a helmsman. Initially suspicious of Ztan, Starfleet assigned him to ships performing minor and routine missions for his first two years of service. He gradually worked his way up a couple of ranks, and transferred to Security, where his talents could be put to better use. Despite one citation on his record for an 'indiscretion' in a Jeffries tube, Z'tan's Starfleet career has been exemplery.

Z'tan was chafing a little, having limited responsibilities and only being posted to areas that Starfleet felt safe having a resident Romulan. He was being held back and strategically reassigned, his career dictated by diplomats. Hearing about open positions in the Delta Quadrant, Z'tan applied. Starfleet, figuring there wasn't much mischief a Romulan could get up to all the way out there, agreed. Z'tan was reassigned to the USS Tribulation as its new Chief of Security. At least out there, Z'tan resoned, he may get a chance to prove himself and earn promotions based on merit, not politics.

With the new and upheaval of Kepler's relocation, Z'tan received both a promotion and reassignment. He is now the Chief Security/Tactical Officer on the USS Venice. To Z'tan's chagrin, his commanding officer has also requested that he remain accompanied by Ensign Alex Shay. While his Romulan background and knowledge of the Cardassian langauage will undoubtedly be useful, it also means that more eyes will be on Z'tan. He'll have to tread carefully... and he knows it.
